Most of the candle molds I own are either from Etsy or Amazon. I’ve seen a lot of Boowan Nicole candle molds on Pinterest lately so I wanted to try this brand out. This asparagus mold caught my attention immediately so it felt like a good place to start. I might have to add it to the rotation of candle supply companies that I order from because I loved my first purchase.
Testing Out the Asparagus Mold
This was the first time I’ve ever used a candle mold that is designed to be de-molded from the side. You pour the wax into a hole at one end of the candle (the bottom of the asparagus). After it cures, you turn it on its side to unwrap it and reveal the candle rather than dumping the candle out of the mold from either the top or bottom. I think I might prefer this style of mold because I don’t have to worry about the candle getting stuck.
The mold is made out of a squishy silicone material that has already been split down the side. To keep the wax from leaking out, there’s a harder “shell” that gets secured around the silicone mold with rubber bands. The mold, the shell, and the rubber bands were all included in the order. The metal wick bar was something I already owned.
My first attempt at making this asparagus candle was mostly a success minus the obvious seam along one side of the candle. This happened at the place where the mold was cut. I’m wondering if this will always happen to the candle or if it was caused by my failure to line up the 2 pieces of silicone at the place where the mold was cut. I don’t mind the line here, but I will keep testing to see if I can successfully make an asparagus candle that is smooth all the way around. Will report back!
Tips for Using the Boowan Nicole Asparagus Mold
Here are a few of my tips for getting the best results with this asparagus mold:
- As with all molded candles, use a harder wax for better results. I’d recommend paraffin, beeswax, or any sort of pillar wax blend. Don’t use something soft like 100% soy wax or coconut apricot wax. You have to apply some pressure to the candle when you’re removing it from the mold and if you use a softer wax, the candle might bend or break.
- Be patient with the de-molding process. When I’m using a hard mold, I might only wait 4-6 hours to de-mold the candle because you can just pop it right out without touching the candle, but with a softer silicone mold like this, you’ll want to wait at least 12 hours. Again, you have to kind of wiggle the candle out of the mold and this process could mess up a candle that hasn’t been given a good chance to cure.
- Use a ruler to help you center the wick. One end of the candle mold is open to all for pouring. The other end of the candle mold is obviously solid so that no wax leaks out, but you’re going to have to poke a small hole in this side to string the wick through. I just eye-balled it so my wick wasn’t exactly centered and it didn’t come through the middle of the asparagus top. It was kind of off center. I can fix this the next time I make a candle, but I’d recommend getting out a ruler and marking the center so that you avoid this problem.
Final Thoughts on Boowan Nicole
This Boowan Nicole candle mold was easy to use and was great quality for the price. Even though it came all the way from Australia, it shipped quickly! It was a little more expensive than the molds I usually buy, but I’ve found that the cheaper molds can be hit or miss. Some of them have arrived slightly misshapen or are uneven on the bottom and create candles that aren’t completely level. This asparagus mold was $17. I do think that the price matches the quality.
I like what I’ve seen of Boowan Nicole so far and I will definitely make a second order.
